
The prefecture of Grevena is located in the northwestern part of Greece and belongs to the western
part of the District of Macedonia. The prefecture is bordering with the prefecture of Kozavn
(Κοζανής), Kastoria (Καστοριάς), Iwavvivwv (Ιωαννίνων), Trikalwv (Τρικάλων), and Larisas
(Λάρισας). The prefecture's area includes 2,290 Km2 and its population is equal to
36,717 (according to the last census). The prefecture's area mainly includes mountains. The
prefecture's 1/3 and more specific the western part include the eastern side of the mountain Pindos
(Πινδός) where mountain Orliaka (Όρλιακα), Lugkos (Λύγκος), Smolikas (Σμόλικας) with the
highest point at 2,610 meters at Smolika (Σμόλικα). On the southern part the mountain of Xasia
(Χάσια) and Antixasia (Αντιχάσια). On the northern and northeastern the mountain of Bourinos
(Βούρινος) and Kamvounia (Καμβούνια). Two main rivers go throw the prefecture of Grevena, the
river Aliakmonas (Αλιάκμονα) and Benetiko (Βενέτικο).
The area was populated from the early years. From the ancient years is part of the District of
Macedonia with the name of Elumia (Ελυμία) or Eleimeia (Ελείμεια). Thucydides (Θουκυδίδης)
wrote: "των γαρ Μακεδόνων εισί και Ελιμιώται", which translates to: 'and the Elimiwtes are
Macedocians'. The ancient castles which are located at Spilaio, Alatopetra - Poluneri and other
ancient discoveries show the existance of Grevena prior to the pre-Macedonian years, 1500 B.C. On
those ancient discoveries show the relation with the sourthern's Greece civilization such as Mukinaiko
(Μυκηναϊκό). The area took part on all the country's fights. Soldiers from the area participated during
the Trojan war as a light-worriers. During the Alexander the Great people from the current prefecture
of Grevena participated both in the front line with horses and without horses. During the Roman
invasion it took part against the Romans with a result to obtain some casual in terms of population and
religion development of the area. During the Ottoman Empire gave a lot to the nation. This was due to
the rough area, which resulted in small interaction between the Greek population and the Turks. From
the area a large number of worriers appear which took part during the wars against the Ottoman
Empire. Such families include but not limited to the family of Ziakaiwv (Ζιακαίων), Koruzns
(Κορυζής), Toskas (Τόσκας) and many others. Also, a large increase of monastery complexes in the
area help to preserve the Greek-Christian Ideas and life style.
During the Macedonian war approximately the complete population from the area took part. With the
dedication from the residents, Grevena was liberated from the Ottoman Empire on October
13th, 1912. During the Greek-Italian war (during the WWII) the residents of Grevena
were involved to a large extend. Not only as a soldiers (etc. First battalion which entered Korutsa
(Κορυτσά) was the Grevena's battalion), but the unarmed people took part during the war using any
means they were able to find and help. Most of the unarmed residents for the Grevena area were
helping transporting arms, food, clothes, etc. to the soldiers, with the result, on November
1st-8th in 1940 to destroy Tzoulia (Τζούλια) division from the
Italian army at Anitsas Filippaiwn (Ανίτσας Φιλιππαίων). The fights against the German-Italian forces
were organized until March 1943 when it was set free from the external forces after the destroyed and
captured sto Farduampo (Φαρδύκαμπο) [bridge of Alliakmona (Αλιάκμονα)] the Italian's battalion
which oversee the area of Grevena, after the attack from the people from the areas Grevena, Boiou
(Βοϊου) and Siatistas (Σιάτιστας).
The prefecture of Grevena is mainly agriculture area. There is where the National forest of Pindou
(Πίνδου), which is one of most important National forest in the country. The impressive view with the
beautiful vegetation, large falls and the small rivers with a lot of water and strong current. It is worth it
to visit the National Ski Resort Basilitsa (Βασιλίτσας), which is located apporximately 30 miles from
Grevena, in the heart of mountain Pindos. Also, monasteries (Osiou Nikavora and Euaggelistras in
Panagia, Koimnsns Qeotokou at Spilaio and Saint Paraskeuns at Samarina) around the prefecture of
Grevena is something that you need to visit if you are in the area.
